OUTSIDE THE GENERAL store Camille handed Grant the list she’d compiled. “That’s everything.”

He accepted the list, glanced it over then opened the car door. “I’ll be right back.”

As much as she hated to admit it, she was glad Nicholas made no move to get out as Grant strode away from the car. Since the closest shopping was twenty miles away, she’d never walked into Mr. Chapman’s store and found it empty of patrons. Risking another confrontation wasn’t on her agenda. She already felt stressed to the max. More trouble would push her closer to that edge that threatened her composure and would only delay their getting down to business.

“You should go with Bridges.”

Nicholas’s suggestion startled her. “I thought it would be better if I stayed in the car.” If she went inside there would be greetings, hugs and questions, slowing their departure. She didn’t want to do anything that kept them a minute longer.

“Anyone walking past who sees you will stop to chat.”

Camille surveyed the street. Shoppers and those on their way to work strolled along the sidewalks, chatting and waving to each other. He was right. If any of those people spotted her, a crowd would gather. That she was in the car with Nicholas Sterling, the beast, would only raise questions she couldn’t answer.

And the news would travel at warp speed to her parents.

“Okay.” She opened the door and scrambled out. A firm boost from her hip sent the door closing. She hurried around the hood of the car and across the sidewalk.

Camille didn’t breathe easy until she was through the store’s entrance. She dared to glance back at the car and no one seemed to have noticed the passenger still seated in the back.

“Thank God,” she muttered. A quick survey around the store and she spotted Grant in the last aisle.

Ducking behind a cluster of patrons in deep debate over the coming presidential election, she managed to reach Grant without notice. He’d already picked out a couple of heavy-duty flashlights and extra batteries along with a small battery-operated lantern. Those caves would be dark as pitch.

“Finding everything?” She peeked into the basket he carried and noted the wool caps and gloves. Life in Maine ensured that even the smallest of general stores carried certain essentials. Maine weather could turn brutal rather quickly.

“Just about.”

He’d also selected a box of sidewalk chalk. She picked up the box and managed a smile. “In case we get bored?” Memories of her and her older sister playing hopscotch on the sidewalk in front of the mayor’s office eased some of the pressure on her chest. Camille’s life had been so insane since she’d regained consciousness that she’d scarcely even thought of Corrine. She really missed her sister right now. Corrine had chosen a career serving her country. For the past year she had been stationed in Iraq. She hadn’t been able to rush home while Camille was missing but she would be home next month. Camille prayed she would be able to introduce her sister to her new nephew.
